Voices from the Cohorts
Tan Chee Kiat
Senior engineer, Jurong West
"I had been meaning to sort out my CPF situation for years. The introductory course was the first time someone walked me through my Ordinary, Special, and MediSave accounts in a way that connected. I left with a document I actually used."
Course 1 — March 2025
Lim Hwee Ling
Educator, Tampines
"The income planning course was exactly what I had been searching for. Siti explained REITs and Singapore Savings Bonds clearly and without pressure. I came away with a proper picture of what an income position could look like for my household."
Course 2 — February 2025
Ramesh Kumar
Logistics manager, Woodlands
"The retirement course took nine weeks, which felt long when I signed up. Looking back, I think that was the point. The SRS sequencing session alone changed how I had been thinking about my next few years. The family folder is now filed at home."
Course 3 — January 2025
Ng Khai Yong
Accountant, Bishan
"I work with numbers every day but had never sat down properly with my own balance sheet. The first course gave me the structure I needed. The instructor's patience with questions that others might find basic was genuinely appreciated."
Course 1 — March 2025
Zainab Hassan
HR director, Queenstown
"I took the income planning course after a colleague's recommendation. The seven weeks gave me time to read about SGX REITs and actually look at what I already held. There was no pressure at any point, which made a real difference."
Course 2 — February 2025
Chan Lee Sian
Retired civil servant, Ang Mo Kio
"The CPF LIFE session in the retirement course addressed questions I had carried for three years. I finally made my election the month after the course ended. The personal folder now lives in the drawer alongside my will — which is where it belongs."
Course 3 — April 2025
Learning Journeys
Three Participants, Three Different Starting Points
Case Study — Course 1
Starting Without a Clear Picture
Participant background: 47-year-old project manager
The situation: A participant with a steady income and a handful of accounts — CPF, a bank fixed deposit, and a unit trust — but no clear understanding of how they related to one another.
During the course: The balance sheet session revealed that the household had significant equity in CPF but no clear plan for drawing on it. The investment categories session provided a first framework for thinking about what was already held.
After the course: Left with a personal document mapping all accounts, values, and roles. Used it as the basis for a subsequent conversation with a licensed adviser.
"I had all the pieces. The course helped me see them on one page for the first time."
Case Study — Course 2
Rebuilding Income Thinking at 54
Participant background: 54-year-old self-employed consultant
The situation: A self-employed participant with SRS contributions and some SGX holdings but no structured approach to income for the years after full-time work ceased.
During the course: The REIT module provided clarity on yield sustainability. The fee analysis session prompted a review of existing holdings that identified approximately 0.9% in fees that could be reduced.
After the course: Completed a draft income plan that formed the starting point for restructuring the existing portfolio over the following six months.
"The fee analysis session alone was worth the course fee."
Case Study — Course 3
Planning a Retirement Six Years Away
Participant background: 59-year-old hospital administrator
The situation: A participant within six years of expected retirement with no SRS drawdown strategy and a CPF LIFE election decision outstanding.
During the course: The SRS drawdown sequencing session clarified the tax implications of different withdrawal timings. The beneficiary coordination session prompted completion of a previously deferred nomination.
After the course: Completed the CPF LIFE election during the course period and filed a family reference folder with all relevant documents for the first time.
"I left with decisions made that I had been putting off. That alone changed things."
